TEN HOUR RACE - Saturday 7th July - Sponsored charity: The Abbey School

Report by Jim Morley

Frensham Sailing Club’s annual Ten Hour Race is a fun event always held in aid of a charity.

This year the event was in aid of Farnham’s Abbey School whose children are keen supporters of Sailability.

The weather conditions varied with a shifting South Easterly breeze. Although the sun shone at times the event was sent periods of intense soaking rain. This did nothing to spoil the enjoyment of the nineteen competing crews sailing fifteen different designs of racing boat. Each boat sails a fifty minute stint and then makes a pit stop change of crew.

The set course took the boats to every part of the lake. The different designs are scored on a handicap system that makes the lake a level playing field. Throughout the ten hours the crews on the water were supported by family and friends ashore including many Cadet parents. An ice cream van for the children and entertainment by a rock musician enlivened the shoreside, while the galley, kitchen was kept busy through the day as crews changed shifts on the water.

As the last boats finished ,crews and supporters crowded the club house for the post race barbecue followed by the prize giving.

Special thanks were given to the organising team; Karen Ferguson, Kim Davies, Sally Townsley and Ian Hiscocks. To race officer: Tim Hemsley. To the timing team: Graham Howlett, Pat and Sue, who manned the race line computer throughout the day and posted updated results each hour. Especial thanks went to the galley team of Sala and the kitchen girls. And of course the BBQ team: Steve White and his children. Not forgetting the safety boat crews who kept an eye on the water through the day.

If you have raised money for the Abbey School then please hand cheques or cash to the Club Manager, Julian Davies, or any member of the General Committee. It is not too late to make a donation towards the school, your contribution will be very much appreciated and will help to enrich the lives of the students.

The Club’s Annual 10 Hour Race - Saturday 7th July 2012

OLYMPIC COUNTRIES

It’s just three weeks to go to the 10 Hour Race; the largest and most popular annual sailing and social event in the Frensham calendar.
The theme this year is 'Olympic Countries' and each entry to the race will be representing one of the countries at the Olympics, and we expect the boat and its crew to be suitably dressed! There will be a draw one week before the event to decide which country your team will allocated.
The Race will start at 9am and finish at 7pm. There will be team changes every 50 minutes.

There will also be the usual wide range of 'on-shore' attractions – good food and real ale, plus live entertainment throughout the afternoon.

Drinks and snacks will be available throughout the day and a Meat Feast – with Vegetarian Options - will be served from around 7.15pm with prize-giving scheduled for 8.15pm.

The 10 Hour Race is about having fun and traditionally a team consists of a range of sailing abilities. Most teams have at least 3 crews: one of good ability, one of moderate ability and one relatively inexperienced. Your Class Captain will help you make up a team or allocate you to a team if you wish.

Each year, the Club uses the event to raise money for a good cause. This year, the appeal is in aid of The Abbey School in Farnham – a special school for 11-16 year olds with learning difficulties and communication disorders - so we need your help to raise lots of money.

Sponsorship forms will be available for download soon, see “News & Events” on the website. Please fill in the form for Race Entry, Food Tickets and Sponsorship as soon as possible.

Further forms will be available in the club foyer OR you can make a donation to 'Frensham Pond Sailing Club', marked “The Abbey School”. Monies raised, sponsorship forms and donations can be handed in at the club kitchen, or to any General Committee member.

So put the date in your diary, encourage your family, friends & colleagues to support you and book your tickets now.

Cheques, with entry forms, should be made payable to 'Frensham Pond Sailing Club' and either sent to Julian Davies, Club Manager, at Frensham Pond Sailing Club, Pond Lane, Churt, Farnham, Surrey, GU10 2QA or handed to Julian in the office.
