RS Tera
The RS Tera is a single person sailing dinghy geared towards young sailors. The boat is a one-design class with a choice of sail sizes and a robust hull which copes with the inevitable knocks so it stays competitive and is a cost effective way into sailing for youngsters. The RS Tera fleet at Frensham trains weekly and has a record of producing young some of the most competitive sailors in the class, with notable succes at National and International level.
About the RS Tera
The RS Tera is a one-design ISAF / World Sailing International Class and an RYA Recognised Junior Class.
The hull is robust and essentially a modern skiff design – pointed front flaring to flat bottomed, hard chine after-sections. It is very stable and has a variety of rig options so is well suited to a range of ages and weights. The rig options are:
Mini - Equivalent to a Sport sail with two reefs. Often used by very light helms or in strong winds.
Sport - 3.7m2 Dacron sail suitable for crew weight 30Kg and up (age approx: 7-13yrs).
Pro - 4.8m2 Mylar sail suitable for crew weight 40Kg and up (age approx: 12-15yrs).
Most of the RS Teras at Frensham use the Sport rig, although there is usually a group of older children traiing with the Pro rig.
Training at Frensham
The Frensham RS Tera fleet sails every Saturday throughout the year. Normally two groups are run:
Development group which progresses the sailing skills of the children on from RYA Youth Level 2 and focuses on boat handling and general sailing skills.
Advanced group which concentrates on racing skills.
Training starts with a short briefing followed by a training session on the water which lasts for around 2 hours. During the winter the briefing is normally at 10:00 and in the summer at 10:30.
For those keen and able to race in a bigger fleet there is also a Club race series on Saturday afternoon which offers a good introduction to club racing. This is run as a pursuit race so RS Teras effectively get their own start
Sailors from the Frensham RS Tera fleet regularly compete at National and International level, with many notable successes including National and World championship winners. The Club’s young sailors have gone on to further successes in RS Fevas, RS200s, ILCA (Laser) and RS Aeros.
